We engaged Maria to work with our son, Robby just past half way through his 3rd Grade year. He had been diagnosed as ADHD and was struggling to adjust to the ever increasing expectations. His grades had gone from A's and B's in 2nd Grade to C's and D's and F's in Third. Robby's motivation was down. He was repeated stating that he wasn't smart (not the case!) and that he didn't like school. My wife and I were a bit at wits end as to what to do.

Additionally, Ohio has a high stakes test at the end of the 3rd grade that every student must pass in order to advance to the 4th grade.

Maria really turned that around. She focused on developing strategies that he could implement to succeed at his day to day school work as well as better understand the context of the lessons. Additionally she gave him tools to help with focusing, always a challenge with an 8 yr old boy!

Within a few weeks we began to see positive results. By the beginning of the 4th quarter his teachers had noticed a positive change in Robby's behavior and motivation and he achieved an award for academic excellence in the 4th quarter. He stopped saying he couldn't do things and he looked forward to going to school. Oh, and he passed the final exam without issue.

We were disappointed that Maria moved to Atlanta as it would have been fabulous to have her work with Robby next year.

(Just for context - Maria worked with Robby 2 times a week most weeks and 3 times a week to prep for the final exam from early February through the end of May.)

My daughter does NOT like to read!  Sound familiar?

Last year, in the 7th grade, she was required to read one book of a different genre each month and then take an Accelerated Reader test on the book.  What a nightmare!  She struggled to remember details and sometimes couldn't even tell me a basic summary of the book. As a result, she was failing her AR tests.  Around the middle of the school year she began working with Maria.  Maria would read the book that my daughter was reading and they would Skype every few days to discuss the few chapters she read since the previous Skype.  By breaking the book into sections and discussing it along the way, it helped her to understand and remember the details.  Maria also taught her how to take notes throughout the book. Having Maria work with her in this way took away the constant battle at home.  The results... She scored a 100% on the first AR test!  She continued to do well the rest of the year.

Another thing I really liked about Maria that I hadn't found in other tutors was the detailed feedback she provided in each invoice.  She listed my daughter's successes, as well as what she was still struggling with.  She explained specifically what she worked on with her and the next steps.  It gave me tools to use when helping her on my own because I could remind her of the tools she had learned with Maria.

Maria is warm, intelligent, creative, patient and encouraging... all things you want in a tutor.  I know she can do so much more than I was using her for, but as anyone who has a child that struggles knows, it is often better to just start with one area of weakness.

The Atlanta area is lucky to have her.  I recommend giving her a try.
